Ian Bashbar, OOO-DOT’s principle liaison on the Oregon BDR project, says the 312-mile route was chosen for its accessibility and proximity to many Oregon must-see stops, including the Oregon Vortex, the Enchanted Forest, the Vacuum Museum, and the 45th Parallel sign, located just north of the state capitol of Salem, which has 37 pot shops, a WingStop and an artisan hot chocolate food cart that also sells a variety of gluten, soy, sugar, and dairy-free muffins. While most riders want routes including sections of dirt or gravel roads threading through scenic wonders, OOO-DOT has gone a different route, discouraging riders from seeking out some of the state’s natural wonders, such as Crater Lake, Multnomah Falls or the high desert playa east of the Cascade mountain range. The route? OOO-DOT has chosen Interstate 5, which runs the length of the state north and south.
However, the choice of routes has some adventure riders scratching their heads. On April 1, officials with the Oregon Offroad and Overland Department of Transportation (OOO-DOT) said they had approved a BDR route for the state.
